JUNE 2008

“I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection, the fellowship of sharing in his suffering, becoming like him in death, and so, somehow to attain the resurrection from the dead.” Philippians 3:10-11

Where is your identity found? Paul is writing from the true conversion of his own heart. As a devout Jew, Paul’s life was flawless according to the Jewish law that he went so far as to persecute Christians. When Christ met Paul on the road to Damascus he was confronted with his lifestyle according to the law. Christ had shown him that all his efforts to uphold the law were meaningless and that he must die to his self-centered life and find his true identity not in what he has done, but rather what Christ has done for him. As Christians, we find our identity in the death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Contrary to how our cultural promotes a self-centered lifestyle that ultimately leads to death, Christ calls us to share in his suffering and resurrection of laying down our life that we may gain true life in Christ.

Japanese Missionary: Toshiro Oyama

Toshiro Oyama is a professional surfer from Japan and can be found at the surf spot “Trestles” passing out Noah’s Arc One4One DVDs to fellow Japanese surfers who travel to America in search of good waves. Toshiro first met Bryan Jennings in 1997 in France while traveling the World Qualifying Series (WQS) on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) tour. While sharing a slice of pizza and the Gospel of Jesus Christ with a Brazilian pro surfer, Toshiro caught Bryan’s attention and they soon became good friends. The following year in Japan, while making his second Walking On Water film (Changes), Bryan competed with Toshi in a WQS contest while also filming Toshiro for the film’s Japan section. Bryan and Toshiro have continued Walking On Water outreaches in Japan ever since.

Walking On Water is blessed to have Toshiro on board as he will be helping plan the Japan Mission Trip “Surfing the Rising Sun” with Walking On Water's Missions Director. He will also be translating the new film Walking On Water into Japanese and as always, evangelizing to the Japanese surfers in America with Noah’s Arc One4One DVDs. Please pray for Toshiro as he steps out in faith to be a missionary to the growing population of Japanese surfers in Southern California!

New Zealand Tour Update

After much anticipation and planning we have arrived in New Zealand for a 19-spot tour. Christian Surfers (CS) New Zealand is thrilled to help us organize and promote events to reach their local surfing community and after our first three showings, we are more than excited to finish the journey in this beautiful country. We hosted our first premiere in Whangarei, which attracted a crowd filling the building. Both the surfing and non-surfing community came out for this event including a few of the local Maori (the indigenous people of New Zealand). Whangarei is an area where there is no CS present so we worked with a guy named Miguel to try and get one started. After the successful event, there is no doubt the premiere of Walking On Water served as a great kick off to a new CS mission. We followed up the next two evenings with two separate showings in Auckland. We were also able to host a private screening of Noah’s Arc in the back of our camper-van as we picked up three German hitchhikers and drove them a couple hours to Raglan. You never know who God will bring along! Please continue to pray for our safety while traveling around NZ.

Movement Outreach was Huge Success

Walking On Water, in partnership with Refuge High School Youth Ministry of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, hosted an amazing outreach on May 23rd and 24th at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa in Santa Ana, CA. The two day event was a youth outreach designed to inspire and reach the youth of this generation with the life changing message of Jesus Christ. Friday we hosted a night of worship with musician Phil Wickham and a special message from Britt Merrick. Saturday night kicked off with a skateboard demo by Boarders For Christ and a gospel presentation with skate legend Christian Hosoi. Christian gave a powerful presentation of the gospel and over 80 youth came forward to receive Christ. The skate demo was followed by a BMX demo and then a Freestyle Motocross demo with Riders for Christ. On the main stage hip hop group LA Symphony and Jon Foreman, lead singer of the band Switchfoot performed an amazing concert for the crowd. Walking On Water’s Director of Outreach Mike Doyle and Britt Merrick both shared brief messages with hundreds of people responding to the message.

Closing out the night was the North Orange County premiere of Walking On Water on an outdoor screen introduced by the Director of Walking On Water Bryan Jennings and pro surfer Matt Beacham. Through out the evening there were also special events going on inside in the indoor coffeehouse with screenings of Invisible Children, Noah’s Arc and a special message from the founder of To Write Love On Her Arms Jamie Tworkowski. Over 7,000 young people came out and hundred prayed to receive Christ! We would like to extend a special thank you all the hard working people at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, and everyone who joined with us in prayer and promotion for this event. God did an amazing work and we were all privileged to be a part of it.”

2008 Walking On Water Dream Surf Camps

This summer’s surf camps are fast approaching and we still have room available in both camps. We ask you to help us spread the word to all those who might be interested in attending. Every summer the Lord does an amazing work through the camps and we are excited to see what He has in store for this year. We also ask for your continued prayer over the camps as we know this is vital for their success. Please pray that God hand selects each staff member and camper that He wants to be there, and that each person involved would be impacted by the Lord. Please continue to pray for the safety of the camps as well. Thank you as we truly covet your prayers. You can visit our website for the latest on the camps as well as registration information.
