Teen shark attack victim Bethany Hamilton coming to San Diego in February for the Southern California premiere of her new documentary.
Bethany Hamilton, a 13-year-old girl destined for a successful surfing career, lost her arm to a 14-foot tiger shark on Oct. 31, 2003. The attack didn’t stop this determined Soul Surfer from giving up. Instead, it compelled her to discover her purpose in life as she overcame the loss of her arm and got back on the board just three weeks later. Her new documentary Heart of a Soul Surfer, which is being released by the San Diego based Christian surf film company Walking On Water, digs deep into the heart of Bethany's abiding faith in God, and tackles difficult questions such as 'Why does God allow bad things to happen in our lives?' It features exclusive surf & family footage of Bethany before & after the attack, including Bethany's first attempts at surfing with one arm, as well as her winning the 2005 NSSA National Surfing Championship, just 19 months after the attack. Heart of a Soul Surfer is a powerful story told from the heart of a young woman with great passion and dedication to God.
Since her attack Bethany has become an international celebrity having appeared on everything from Oprah to The Today Show. She has also authored her own bestselling book "Heart of A Soul Surfer".

Becky Baumgartner is a first-time director & producer, currently living in Kauai, Hawaii. She graduated in 2006 from California State University Fullerton with a BA in Film Production and a few student films under her belt.
During her schooling she had been working for Bethany Hamilton's (www.bethanyhamilton.com) family as an assistant. "I was having to turn down so many churches and organizations that wanted Bethany to come speak in person. But she was just too busy. I felt so bad having to turn people down and I wanted to be able to offer them an alternative. That's when I came up with the idea for 'Heart of a Soul Surfer.'" Since she was attending film school she thought of making a video of Bethany sharing what she would want to talk about if she went to those events. So, she presented the idea to Bethany & the Hamilton family, they loved it and agreed to let her produce it.
Having already begun working on the video about Bethany, the summer Becky finished college, she went into action to complete this 30-minute documentary about her young friend and fellow surfer. Her vision for the project grew as time went on, but the main focus remained - telling the story from Bethany's heart. The movie was released with help from Walking On Water in February 2007 (www.heartofasoulsurfer.com) and greeted with an overwhelmingly positive response by viewers of all ages.
Today, Becky operates under her name Becky Baumgartner Productions. Future projects are already being proposed and considered, but in the long run, she hopes to get involved with producing feature films that inspire a positive change in people's lives.
