Can't Keep Me Down - Media
August 1st 2006:
Walking On Water releases a new surf documentary, Can't Keep Me Down.
Can't Keep Me Down is a 45-minute documentary based on the life of 29 year old Bobby DuCharme, an amateur surfer from Ocean Beach, CA who grew up alongside well-known professionals like Benji Weatherley and Justin Poston. Bobby became paralyzed after a tragic surf accident in 1999. The accident left him a Quadriplegic with limited use of his right hand.
Over the past 6 years, Bobby has edited together 5 surf movies on his computer using footage donated by local video makers like Taylor Steele and Chris Gabriel. His videos have premiered at local venues throughout San Diego County, the proceeds going toward Bobby's 24-hour care. Bobby became a Christian 2 years ago, and now hopes for his story to be used as a powerful tool for reaching people across the world.
“An amazing story of tragedy and eternal consequences. Thoroughly enjoyable.“
CJ Hobgood / 2001 World Surfing Champion
“Bobby's story is a stark reminder of surfing's very real dangers, life's fragility, and the relationships what truly make us whole.“
Chris Mauro / SURFER Magazine
”There are places a surfer goes that don't require a surfboard. Can't Keep Me Down takes you there and beyond. A 'moving' picture every surfer and non surfer should see.“
Chris Ahrens / Risen Magazine
Bryan Jennings' Walking On Water, makers of Christian surf movies like The Outsiders and Noah's Arc, has teamed-up with Bobby to produce this documentary. Jesse Schluntz, a surf video producer from Encinitas, was brought on to direct the project in cooperation with Bobby and Walking On Water.

Jesse Schluntz lives in Encinitas, California, and has been producing surf videos since 1995. His first amateur release, Western Promise, premiered in the San Dieguito High School Cafeteria for a cover charge of $1. The video's cast featured everyone from local surfers like Seth Elmer to world-renowned professionals like Kelly Slater. Over the next 4 years, both Jesse's skills and equipment saw vast improvement. Jesse also supported his daily video-making habit by delivering food for Leucadia Pizzeria at night.
His next 3 releases became cult classics in the surf video world, now known as the infamous TearDevils Trilogy. Although the level of surfing was rarely as strong as some of the more-well budgeted hits in the industry, the antics of Jesse's twisted companions like Chris Cote and Ozzy Osbourne (host of TearDevils 3) managed to corner the surfing world’s comical market. The TearDevils trilogy received two awards for humor from the Annual Surfer Poll and Video Awards.
After a long hiatus in Australia, followed by a short stint as Surfer Magazine's most feared video reviewer, Jesse returned to the world of surf movie production with a whole new take on life. Ironically, the king of exploding heads and projectile milk vomit went on to produce the most successful Christian surf movie of all time, The Outsiders.
The video's stars included top professionals like Tim Curran, Noah Snyder, Matt Beacham, and 2001 World Champion CJ Hobgood. Both performance and production wise, The Outsiders was on a much higher level than any of Jesse's previous work, and the video received good reviews in every major US surf publication.
Despite it's controversial message, The Outsiders was immediately snatched-up by mainstream video distributors, and managed to find it's way into hundreds of surf shops across the United States, Japan, and Europe. The video, which was eventually subtitled in 6 languages, has toured through both the coastal and central United States, as well as Australia, South and Central America, and the UK.
Today Jesse has adopted the company name CCR Video. He produced the annual Surfer and Powder Magazine Poll and Video Award shows for 5 years, and his current projects consist mostly of television work including a regular season of surf/reality shows called SteelRoots. Through working projects like this, Jesse has developed deep relationships with many well-known Christian professionals in the surfing world. These relationships continue to open the door for new movies and television shows involving Christian surfers year after year.
